Their Reactions

Pay Attention to the Reactions of Others

In the last lesson, the focus was on the ACTIONS of others and your need to be OBSERVANT. As we move forward, your need to be observant does not change and we add another focal point for you.

You need to focus on the REACTIONS of others, too.

If you are observing someone who is outgoing and focused on getting things done, you would likely anticipate them reacting to a situation by choosing a course of action very quickly and jumping in right away to handle the situation.

Likewise if someone you knew shared their desire to get more facts and learn more to be sure they had all the right information before acting, you wouldn't be surprised to line that up with behaviors you had seen from them before that were reserved/slower-paced & task focused.

All of these new perspectives about how people act and react come out of the simple and basic concepts of the DISC Model of Human Behavior that you have have been learning about.

Remember, it is easiest to pay attention to the motor, first. Recognize what energy the other person is bringing to the situation and adjust your style to match that. Then, add in your observations about their orientation toward people or tasks. This will help you to hone in even more on understanding them better and adjusting to connect with them better so your relationships are better.

By knowing just these two concepts - the motor and the compass - you will be able to adjust your expectations, change your own behavior, and more effectively meet your employees' needs. Relating to them in a way that is similar to their personality will help you improve your relationship with them.

What’s Next

Keep observing! (Or, keep thinking about someone you know and are familiar with their behavior.) Pay attention and take notes about the other person's behaviors, actions and reactions. These notes will be very important to you for the quiz that is at the end of the next lesson.
